The shortage of healthcare professionals is an issue that has raised concerns around the world. During the pandemic, this reality became more evident, as public and private hospitals were unable to increase the number of personnel in the desired proportion, due to a lack of professionals.

A report by the World Health Organization (WHO), released at the beginning of the pandemic, pointed out that the world was already facing a shortage of 5.9 million nurses. After all the pressure Covid-19 has put on the entire system, it’s not hard to imagine that this number is even higher.

In this scenario, new technologies will play an essential role in the training of new professionals, which could help to change this situation of insufficiency. Experts agree that investing in training, offering more courses in the health area, is something that should be considered a priority in the search for solutions to this crisis.

A good example is the company Elsevier, which has established itself with printed reference books for training and further education in the healthcare field and has decided to stratify the content so that professionals can study in the flow of work.

There is a consensus that the issue of the shortage of professionals is a sensitive area for the healthcare ecosystem, and that technological solutions can help. Prepared annually by Philips, the Future Health Index 2023 indicated that combating the shortage of personnel with digital innovation is one of the three main themes for the sector. More than a third of interviewees (37%) see technology companies as key partners in relieving this pressure.
