The main trends in medical devices

Technology is constantly evolving to bring new tools that allow patients and doctors to monitor their clinical condition.
Some trends are at the top of the list:
Wearable technology
Present in devices that connect to other devices via the internet and bluetooth . Worn on the body itself. Google was the forerunner in 2013 with the launch of Google Glass, a pair of augmented reality glasses. Today, there are models being used in schools that allow blind or low-vision students to read. Then came smart watches and bracelets and, later, clothing developed with wearable technology.
Diabetes control
Sensors and applications that help with glycemic control have revolutionized the way patients manage type 2 diabetes. The sensors are placed on the skin and continuously measure the level of glucose in the blood. Patients don’t need to be constantly prodded and the chances of hypo- or hyperglycemia are reduced.
New pacemakers
The new models are MRI-safe, which was an issue for patients with the old versions. In addition, the battery’s lifespan has been extended, extending the deadline for replacement surgery. Scientists have developed a kit which is the size of a small coin that could harness the kinetic energy generated by the heart and convert it into energy for the pacemaker. Other researches are studying implantable fuel cells that use the excess sugar in the blood to generate energy. Thus, self-charging pacemaker models could be a reality within a few years.
Heart failure detectors
Patients at high risk of heart failure can be implanted with a small device called an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) or CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Device). A new technological solution could be included in both models to warn of the possibility of heart failure weeks in advance.
